Jane:  Yes, you could apply for a secured card. You give the credit card the money (say $500)and then borrow it back to establish credit. After about a year of paying on time and keeping the account in good standing you should be able to get a regular card.

Then, make small loan like less than $1000, but you need to have that amount in your account to cover it. Then, repay this small loan graduately like make monthly payment. That is how you can establish credit.

Etta P:  Try looking into a secured credit card. These are offered at banks and credit unions. You will need to make a deposit into a savings account and yor credit limit is generally equal to that amount. Once you pay on time for a period then they will turn it into a regular unsecured card.

nick:  Jane is correct. If you have no credit, you can apply for a secured credit card to start. Most come with an annual fee and you will have to deposit a certain amount with the issuer (min is usually $500) and that deposit amount is normally your credit limit.

Palermo is also correct. if you are a college student, this is the best time to get credit cards because credit card issuers are willing to issue you cards with no annual fee.

Below are a couple of places to check out.

meditator2:  Yes secured credit card can establish yourself and then be sure to pay it on time to build up good credit. If you don't the percentage itself will rocket high. For instance, I had an att universal card and missing payment by a few days caused it to go up by 8 percent! Some companies will use a late fee but others will just raise your percentage.

worldpeace:  to build credit you have to apply for a card that will take the risk check out www.fastcreditcardapprovals.com and go under poor or no credit section. Use one of these cards for a few months and once you have stablish some credit you could apply for a better one and drop the first one because most likely it will have high interest but this is common with your first credit card.

Jessica P:  I would start with a small loan from you bank. Pay off this loan in a timely manner, making sure not to let any payment deadlines be missed.

This will indicate to your bank that you are professional and responsible with your finances. Once you have completed this, you will be in a good position to ask for a Credit Card from your bank. As for a low limit card which should keep you from blowing your budget and building a great deal of debt.

If the bank is not willing to budge and will not issue a Credit Card, going the secured card route is your best bet.

Here are some links that will help you understand the role that secured credit cards play in your financial longevity.
